Obituary for Marion Edward Foddrill, Sr.

Marion “Bud” “Lucky” Foddrill passed away peacefully in Joplin, MO, on September 20, 2017,
at the age of 88 years. He was born in Harrodsburg, Indiana, on February 21, 1929. He is predeceased by his wife Mary Jane; brother, William; son, Michael; and daughters Lucienda Susan and Vonda Kay. His brother, Sam; sons, John and Marion Jr; daughter, Alena; 13 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren survive him.  All his family and friends will lovingly remember him. Lucky was an industrious man throughout his life.  He began by joining the Merchant Marines when he was 15. Lucky was a dedicated veteran of WWII and saw action in the Chinese Civil War.  He served in the Merchant Marines in 1945, U.S. Army 1945 – 1947, and U.S. Navy 1947 – 1950 serving aboard the USS Saint Paul in the Pacific, U.S. Navy Reserves 1950 – 1954, U. S. Army 1955 – 1956, and saw action in the Chinese Civil War in 1948, Tsing Toa Shanghai, in the China Sea.  His love of travel took him too many ports, getting to know many people. Lucky was known as a kind, caring, and generous person to his family and friends.  He lived a full and interesting life as a soldier, builder, storyteller, and writer who loved history, genealogy, and working on anything he could build.  A self-made man who had his own construction company for many years he was proud to give jobs to many.  He wrote a book, Patriot to Oblivion, which told the story of his family history.  Always interested in finding ways to help and take care of others he will be remembered as a loving, loyal, and dedicated father, grandfather, husband, brother, and friend.   A Memorial Celebration of Lucky’s life will be celebrated on Thursday, September 28, 2017, 10:00 AM at the Pavilion at Mount Hope Cemetery with full military rites. Services are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City.  Visit for online condolences.
